11 Times Prince Harry Brought Shame On The Royal Family
Over two billion people from around the world watched in awe as (arguably) the world’s most famous prince married his beautiful bride, former Suits actress, Meghan Markle.
Watch highlights from of the special day below:
But as traditional and pure as the royal wedding appeared, we all know that in his younger days, the Duke of Sussex’s reputation was a far cry from what it is now. From excessive drinking to racial slurs, the prince truly was a bad boy back in the day.
So, without further ado, here are 11 times Prince Harry embarrassed the Royal Family.
1. Kissing a soldier
Royals are supposed to be quiet about their dating lives and they’re certainly not supposed to engage in over-the-top PDA. However, back in 2009, photos of Prince Harry not only kissing but licking a soldier on his cheek were leaked to the internet.
While the photo caused minor outrage in upper-class circles, many gay activists were thrilled by the sight of a straight man comfortable enough in his sexuality to kiss a man.
“Kissing a fellow soldier in public is a very liberal and clear gesture for somebody who is heterosexual,” one activist remarked. “The world would be a much nicer place if all heterosexuals were like that.”
2. Smoking weed
Prince Harry was only 17 when he started smoking weed and when his father, Prince Charles, found out he sent him straight to rehab for some days. “This was a serious matter which was resolved within the family and is now in the past and closed,” royal officials told The New York Times.
3. Raunchy photos
Remeber back in 2012, when TMZ leaked some undeniably suggestive photos of Duke of Sussex living it up in Las Vegas? One of the photos showed the prince in the middle of a game of strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel suite. He was entirely naked in the photo, his manhood covered by his hands. Buckingham Palace confirmed the authenticity of the photo which also featured an entirely naked female. “Prince Harry has been on a private holiday before he resumes his military duties,” a royal official told CNN.
4. Being a “bad boy” at school
Despite being encouraged to be a positive role model (he is a royal, after all), he never aimed for good grades.
In fact, during a tour of Lesotho and South Africa, he visited Ottery Youth Centre in Cape Town which is for teens from troubled backgrounds. He told the boys: “I would have liked to come to a place likes this. When I was at school, I wanted to be the bad boy.”
5. Fighting with a photographer
In 2004, Harry left a nightclub and moments afterward, lashed out at a paparazzo. A representative for the prince said it was entirely provoked. “Prince Harry was hit in the face by a camera as photographers crowded around him as he was getting into a car,” a spokesman for the royal family told the Telegraph. “In pushing the camera away, it’s understood that a photographer’s lip was cut.”
One teacher claimed other teachers at his high school helped the Duke of Sussex to cheat in an art class because he was such a bad student. She even alleged that one teacher finished his artwork for him during a timed test. Both the teacher and Harry have denied the allegations.
7. Animal cruelty
At a 2010 polo match, Prince Harry’s horse appeared to have been stabbed in the flank by one of his spears causing the animal to bleed. Some people who attended the match claimed the prince continued to ride the horse until the end of the match despite the fact that it was clearly in a lot of pain. However, representatives for the prince say that when he became aware of the injury, he stopped playing immediately.
To watch Harry in action during a polo match, watch the video below and make your own conclusion:
8. SS Costume
In 2005, the 20-year-old prince went to a friend’s “colonial and native” costume party and dressed as a Nazi soldier. “I am very sorry if I caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone,” he said. “It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize.”
When the news broke, tabloid front pages were covered with the damning photo of Harry wearing a swastika armband underneath the headline “Harry the Nazi.”
9. Racial slurs
In 2006, a video surfaced that showed a 21-year-old Harry and others waiting to leave an airport and go to training. Harry can be heard talking in the video and refers to a South Asian soldier as “our little P*ki friend”. That’s a derogatory term for someone of Pakistani heritage and regarded as incredibly offensive.
Take a look at the uncomfortable footage here:
He also called another South Asian soldier a “raghead,” a derogatory term for someone wearing a turban. He immediately apologized and said it wasn’t meant to be malicious.
According to some reports, Prince Harry began drinking at the age of 17 which is hardly a surprise given the wild photos we’ve all seen of his alcohol-fuelled parties.
The unfortunate thing is that this is a year under the legal age of 18 for drinking in the UK.
11. Inappropriately using the word “queer”
Prince Harry apologized after a tabloid released some more questionable footage, recorded back in 2006 while he was in training. He asked a fellow soldier if he was feeling “gay” or “a bit queer on the side” after a performing a very tiring task.
So there you have it: Prince Harry was just a bit of a rebel back in the day. Let’s hope with his new title, new wife (and presumably kids along the way), his wild days are a thing of the past.
