Mother Nature has a remarkable way of making each and every one of us different. In the Animal Kingdom, there’s still a lot of diversity too, even if it’s not as obvious between animals of the same species. But these differences become all too apparent when they are deformities.

While looking different might have the upside of creating a unique appearance, it can put people off, especially when it comes to animals. We live in a world where people want Instagram perfect pets, and those with severe deformities, generally speaking, don’t fall into this category.

Check out the video below to see a dog who is an online hit despite her unusual appearance:

A good example of the problems created by looking different is Lucky the dog. Despite his name, he hadn’t been lucky in life at all. His original owners badly neglected him and because of his unusual appearance, absolutely no one wanted to give him a forever home.

Those who worked at the shelter where Lucky was sent eventually decided to give him away for free so that someone, anyone, would give him a home, and this had the unfortunate effect of him being adopted by negligent people and going in and out for shelters for a time.

One of Lucky’s many owners was a family in Austin. They left poor Lucky outside constantly when they discovered that their cats didn’t like him.

However, everything changed for Lucky thanks to a post on social media.

While in a shelter, one of its staff members decided to take Lucky to the groomers. This made a huge difference to his appearance, and they decided to post a few snaps of him looking smart on social media in the hope that they would pique the interest of the owner he deserved.

One of the many people who saw the post was Jamie Hult. When she saw Lucky, she knew that she had to meet him.

“It just happened to be somebody in my dog rescue world, so right away I contacted him and said ‘I want that dog. I don’t even want to foster it, I wanna take that dog,” Jamie told iHeartdogs.

Sadly, adopting Lucky was no mean feat. Becuase of how badly he had been neglected in the past, he had developed a number of medical problems and was malnourished. He didn’t even have a microchip and suffered from fleas and heartworms.

Even though these problems might have put a lot of people off adopting Lucky, they did not deter Jamie.

She admitted that while it was difficult to nurse Lucky back to health, it was completely worth it.

“He almost didn’t make it,” Jamie revealed. “He was in the oxygen tank for a week. I ended up spending like $8,000 dollars for treatment to get an MRI just to see what was going on because he was so infested… He was like skin and bones. It was a touch-and-go and we almost lost him once. I said to my vet, ‘I don’t care – for this particular dog just do whatever you need to and I will pay whatever it is. Don’t hold back.’ And he made it. He’s healthy. He’s in the free and clear.”

Since Lucky hadn’t been a very Lucky name for this beautiful dog, Jamie decided to give him a new name: Beaux Tox.

“The reason I named him Beaux Tox is because clearly, he looks like he needs botox, and that’s okay,” Jamie explained. “We appreciate beauty in all forms. And the dog bills cost me a fortune which is the reason I don’t have botox!”

A year later, and Beaux Tox is doing fantastically. What’s more is that Jamie got two new pups to keep him company!

Explaining what it’s like to have a dog with a severe deformity, Jamie said, “The thing about Beaux is, is he is extremely smart, he is happy, his face it is a deformity. It literally changes every day. It really mushes to one side, or one day it’s pointy, one day it’s full and squishy – his face changes so often he doesn’t really look the same every day.”

This clever pooch realized that Jamie saved his life, and she revealed that he’s incredibly affectionate to her as a result.

“I’m grateful I got Beaux, and we still rescue and foster,” Jamie said. “He’s fostered kittens. Beaux Tox is good with anything. He’s good with kittens, baby skunks, cats. He’ll watch the tarantula for an hour. He’s very intrigued by everything… for him, everything is exciting.”

Well, if that doesn’t warm you’re cold, dead heart nothing will. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish Beaux Tox and his family all the best.
